The 100 million dollar project replaces Canberra’s first aged-care facility, Goodwin House, which was built in 1961. The original village set a very high standard for its time, and the new village development has delivered high standards once again – with superior materials and benchmark designs used in the construction of the 108 bed residential aged care facility and 150 independent living units. Among other innovations, single level, long corridor buildings have been replaced with multi-level buildings with lift access to move residents vertically.

The various buildings throughout the village are residential in character, and constructed of PGH’s face brick in a variety of colours and patterns, in conjunction with selective amounts of alucobond. Offering an enduring colour, there is no need to paint the bricks, meaning the maintenance over the life of the buildings will be minimal.

Bruce McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer, Goodwin Aged Care Services Limited comments: “One of the key requirements for the Goodwin Retirement Village development was to maintain the quality of the building in perpetuity throughout its life. So, PGH’s Castellano and Deep Terracotta bricks were chosen due to their brilliant colour and nil maintenance."

Mr McKenzie continues: “Another reason for choosing PGH™ was their commitment to ensuring consistency. As the building façades were very large – some walls were twenty metres tall and about seven metres across – ensuring the bricks were all the same colour and pattern was potentially difficult. However, PGH Bricks and Pavers™ worked closely with the construction team to make sure the bricks came from the same batch and had the same material content and colour to get the look the village needed.”

“Finally, the bricks selected had to fit in with the heritage look of the surrounding area so the Deep Terracotta and Castellano were used extensively throughout the development.”
